Noise Induced Hearing Loss

According to the American Hearing Research Foundation, when noise is too loud, it begins to kill cells in the inner ear. As the exposure over time to loud noise increases, more and more hair cells are destroyed and as the number of hair cells decreases, so does your hearing. There is no way to restore life to dead hair cells; the damage is permanent.

We all love listening and jamming to our favorite music stations in our cars. Our children have no choice but, to listen and especially those at the tender ages (newborn - five years). Next time you turn on the radio or go to kick up the volume ... remember this ... constant exposure to loud noise in an enclosed environment is harmful to your child and increases over time. Hearing loss is invisible, and the signs of a hearing loss are subtle especially in babies and young toddlers. The following are developmental guidelines for children with normal hearing; if your child is not reaching these milestones, they should see their physician or audiologist to have their hearing tested.

Birth to four months:

-Most babies are startled by sudden loud sounds
-When sleeping in a quiet room, the baby moves or wakes up at the sound of voices or noises
-Babies seem to calm down when they are crying-even for a moment-at the sound of mother's voice
-Babies seem to recognize their mother's voice better than other voices
-At three to four months, babies will turn their head toward a sound

4 to 8 months:

- Babies will turn their head and eyes toward a sound when the sound is coming from outside the child's
peripheral vision
-Babies begin to enjoy the sound of musical toys (rattles, bells, etc.)
-At approximately six months of age, babies begin babbling in response to someone talking to them

8 to 12 months:

-Babies' voices go up and down in intonation when vocalizing
-Babies turn directly toward a soft noisemaker, or to the calling of their name
-Babies seem to enjoy music and respond by listening, bouncing, or "singing" along

12 to 16 months:

- Children understand many words, and speak about 25 single words

18-24 months:

- Children undergo a "name explosion", they begin to understand that everything has a word that goes with
it, and they begin speaking two word sentences. Children know about 100-200 words.

24-36 months:

- Children begin speaking more fully in sentences, and usually know about 200-400 words

NOW ... what about our older children? Over five million kids ages 6-19 show signs of hearing loss. Consider that when they're sitting in front of the TV playing their video games. Instead of telling your child to turn their iPod down because you can still hear the music even with their earplugs in ... hook them up with headphones or earbuds designed to block out background noise. Believe it or not, your child will automatically lower the volume on their own, say researchers who tested four styles.

"Kids using in-ear noise-blocking headphones/earbuds kept their listening levels as low as if they were sitting in a quiet room," says specialists at Children's Hospital in Boston.

And don't worry ... earbuds price between $25 - $40 ... well worth the price of saving your child's hearing and those on the market today are ones they won't refuse to wear. You can check out Sony's MDR-EX55 shown below ... comes in blue, white, pink and black.

For Sale By Owner Yes Or No

Never in the history of real estate has the market ever been this bad. As it continues on a downward spiral one wonders if we will ever rise above this mess that has been created by banks driven by greed. Any one wanting to sell their home questions themselves more than once whether the time will ever be right for them to turn a profit and make another move.  Should you be a "for sale by owner" individual?

Would it even be wise to take on the venture of listing your home without the help of a realtor? Commissions are definitely negotiable and the average is calculated at 6% of the selling price. When you compare that to a $200,000 home, you are looking at a savings of $10,000 ... an attractive chunk of change to put back in your pocket.

Let's face it, we all know no one really needs a real estate agent to sell your home. No one knows your house, the neighborhood and schools better than you do. There are Assist To Sell and For Sale By Owner websites available to help you through the process and you can set up your own open houses how often and whenever you want and your real estate attorney can draw up a sales contract.

Many homeowners think they can get as much for their home without help and also negotiate the sales price on their own. However, you don't want to throw your broker out with the bath water just yet. A reputable, experienced agent can increase a property's exposure more efficiently than the homeowner with access to the MLS (multiple listing service) and Realtor.com. They most certainly can protect you from legal liabilities that arise during the home-selling process and are much better equipped to suggest the RIGHT listing price, which generally set by a homeowner ends up killing many a deal because the seller can not be objective. Home prices have been affected dramatically by foreclosures ravaging communities across the country and there are too many variables one needs to know that are used in determining a homes true value.

Convenience is a pretty major factor for deciding to use the multitude of services a realtor can provide. They can handle all of the hassles so you don't have to: show your home when the buyer is hot so you don't have to change appointments, rework your childs schedules or, your lifestyle, negotiate a price better because they do it all the price, order the appraisal and inspections with reputable partners they use all the time, answer objections on the spot you may have no idea how to handle, they can re-stage your home to make it more attractive and bring qualified buyers already approved for financing right to your door.

Do you go it alone or, use an agent? The commission savings is a swaying factor that's for sure but, unless you devote as much time to the process as an agent would and factor in all the marketing and advertising backed by their company ... will you really come out on top?

As Parents Age

Your dad use to run beside you so you would not fall while learning how to peddle your very first two-wheeler. Now, you walk beside him as he grasps onto a walker to steady his gait.

Memories of mom rolling out cooking dough and frosting a cake, escapes her now because, hers has faded with time and she can't remember the recipes or how to use simple kitchen utensils.

It is a period in our lives that eventually will affect us all as time stands still for no one.

As our parents age it is important to make sure they are taking care of themselves and staying healthy, especially if they are still living independently on their own. Sometimes they will not admit needing assistance around the house and then other times, they may not realize it at all. The idea of leaving home or receiving in-home help for everyday activities can be distressing for every one involved. Before you get to that point, take the time to sit down with your parents and discuss with them what their plans for the future may be before a disability or dementia occurs.

Seventy percent of people over age 65 will require some kind of long-term care services at some point in their lives. And, contrary to what many people believe, Medicare and private health insurance programs do not pay for the majority of long-term care (LTC) services that most people need … such as dressing or using the bathroom independently. Planning right now … today … is essential to ensuring the proper care will be available when the time arises for yourselves as you age and for your aging parents.
