Can You Stay Free Of Depression?

Depression hurts
Yes, but it’s not easy sometimes.  Okay … a lot of times.  Nowadays we’re hit from all directions contending with just every day factors like facing either a job loss or layoff or cut hours, losing benefits or forced to contribute in order to keep them, a war that doesn’t seem to end, a buckling economy, bullying and shootings in our schools, high gas prices, elected officials who look out for themselves rather than the common good, mother nature rearing her ugly head far too often and on and on.  Am I depressed at times?  Hell ya and who wouldn’t be!  Depression hits us all.

How do we survive the madness so it doesn’t affect our health, our lives and our relationships?  And is there a way of fighting depression without medication?

Watch the booze ~ I know.  I love my wine every night too.  Did you know that drinking releases neurotransmitters that may make you feel better?  It’s true, but tapping the bottle excessively works in the reverse because you work up a tolerance, needing more and then it works as a depressant.  Moderation is key here.

Sweat and laughter ~ You don’t need to do both to make it work.  Believe it or not, they both release endorphins that simply make you feel good.  So go put in 20 minutes of brisk walking, bike riding, playing basketball, or just plain activity to make your self feel better.  Then there’s the other option.  You can hang with a friend who cracks you up or rent a comedy flick that will bring tears of laughter to your eyes.
Need your zzz’s ~ To little sleep will make any one miserable and counting sheep isn’t the answer either, if you can’t shut your brain off.  Don’t be afraid to take a sleep aid but check with your doctor first which one is best for you.

Vitamin D Deficient ~ Studies show low levels have been linked to depression especially when days get shorter and there is less sunlight.

Meditate ~ Come on now.  Try it.  You might like it.  If you don’t want to go the transcendental route, you can either take time out to read a book, practice yoga, listen to soothing music, go for a long, quiet walk or, purchase a small unit that replicates running water for you home or office or both.  Whatever you decide, it’s important to give your mind a rest and escape from the madness.

Cynthia,
Thanks for the suggestions. I struggled with depression and was on an anti-depression medication. I did not like the side-effects and dependency on it.

I searched for natural ways to help my depression and found it in Shaklee (the number 1 natural nutrition company). I was also needing to lose weight, so I started on Shaklee's weight management program and some vitamins. That was 3 years ago.

It took me about 8 months to get to my target weight because I did it in a healthy way. i no longer suffer from depression and I'm 30 pounds lighter and 15 inches smaller! I have maintained this weight loss since June 2009.

I now enjoy the laughter of my children and join in on the fun! I sing and dance like nobody's watching-no matte where I am. I'm back to the youthful person I used to be. What a relief!!
